Display Settings That Drain Your Android Battery (and What to Change)
Modern phones arrive with three flagship features switched on that each cost real battery: 5G, a 120 Hz display and an always-on screen. Manufacturers enable them because they look good in the store, not because they are free. Knowing what each one costs lets you spend battery where you notice it and save where you do not.
The numbers below come from the kind of testing anyone can repeat: same phone, same routine, one variable changed. None of the costs are reasons to disable everything forever; all of them are reasons to choose deliberately instead of inheriting the store demo settings.

5G: The Modem's Appetite
On strong 5G signal the modem's extra cost is modest, a few percent over a day. On marginal signal the phone hunts between 5G and LTE constantly, and that hunting is expensive: in weak-coverage areas the difference can reach 15 to 20 percent of a day's battery. The speed you lose by locking to LTE in those areas is rarely noticeable outside speed tests.
The practical policy is geographic. Leave 5G on where it is strong, and lock LTE for the commute stretch, the office basement or the village where the bars drop to one. Several phones let automation switch the mode by location, which removes the daily thinking.
120 Hz: Smoothness You Can Measure in Minutes
Doubling the refresh rate doubles the frames the panel and GPU push, and the battery pays per frame. Tests on recent flagships put the cost of locked 120 Hz at one to two hours of screen-on time per charge compared with 60 Hz. Adaptive refresh, which drops to 60 Hz or lower for static content, claws back most of that while keeping the smoothness when you scroll.
Choose adaptive, not maximum. The setting name varies by brand, but the principle holds: let the phone run fast when content moves and idle when it does not. Locked 120 Hz is a store demo setting, not a life setting.

Always-On Display: Small Number, Every Hour
An always-on display costs roughly 1 percent of battery per hour, which compounds to 8 to 10 percent over a day of waking hours. On OLED panels showing only a clock the cost is at the low end; add notification icons, a wallpaper or weather, and it climbs. Whether that is worth it depends entirely on how often you glance at the phone without picking it up.
The middle grounds are underrated: tap-to-wake shows the same information on demand at nearly zero idle cost, and scheduling always-on to switch off overnight removes the cheapest saving available, because nobody glances at a clock while asleep.
Brightness and Resolution: The Quiet Pair
Screen brightness remains the single largest battery consumer on any phone, and outdoor auto-brightness spikes are justified. The waste happens indoors, where manual sliders parked at maximum from the last sunny day burn power in a dim room. Adaptive brightness with a quick manual correction teaches the phone your preference within a week.
Some flagships also offer a screen resolution toggle. Dropping from maximum to the middle tier saves a modest amount of GPU power in games and scrolling. The visible difference is smaller than the spec sheet suggests, and worth testing for a day.
