Android Wi-Fi Keeps Disconnecting: Fixes in the Right Order

Few things sour a phone faster than Wi-Fi that drops mid-call or buffers a ten-second clip. The instinct is to blame the phone or the provider at random, but the actual causes cluster in a handful of places, and the fix order matters. Random toggling wastes an evening; a sequence takes twenty minutes.

Work through the steps below in order and stop when the connection holds. Most drops trace back to one of four causes: a confused saved network, a private DNS hiccup, MAC randomization fighting the router, or a crowded channel. Only the last one requires touching the router at all.

Reproduce Before You Repair

Spend five minutes finding the pattern before changing anything. Does the drop happen in one room or everywhere? Only on your phone or on a laptop too? Only during calls and streams, or also while idle? A drop that follows you around the house points at the phone; a drop that stays in the bedroom points at signal strength or the router.

Check one more thing: whether mobile data takes over silently. Android's adaptive connectivity switches to cellular when Wi-Fi stutters, which masks drops until the data bill arrives. Turning off mobile data for ten minutes makes the Wi-Fi behavior honest and visible.

The Phone-Side Trio: Forget, Reset, Private DNS

Start with the saved network itself. Long-press your Wi-Fi name, choose Forget, then reconnect with the password typed fresh. Saved networks accumulate stale settings after router firmware updates, and forgetting clears them in one move. This alone fixes a surprising share of cases.

If drops continue, reset network settings entirely. On Android 16 it lives under System, Reset options, and it wipes saved Wi-Fi, Bluetooth pairings and cellular settings without touching photos or apps. While you are in that menu, set Private DNS to Automatic rather than a custom hostname; a flaky custom DNS provider looks exactly like a Wi-Fi problem.

MAC Randomization vs Your Router

Android randomizes its Wi-Fi MAC address per network by default, which is good for privacy but confuses some routers with access control lists or device-based rules. If your router has MAC filtering, a parental-control profile or an ISP app that recognizes devices, the phone looks like a stranger after every reconnect.

The fix is per-network and reversible. Open the saved network's advanced options and switch from randomized MAC to phone MAC for your home network only. Leave randomization on for cafes and hotels, where it actually protects you.

Router Fixes That Actually Matter

If every device in the house stutters, the router earns its share of suspicion. Two changes do most of the work. First, split the bands or at least confirm your phone sits on 5 GHz near the router and 2.4 GHz far from it, since band steering on older routers often parks phones on the wrong one. Second, set the 2.4 GHz channel manually to 1, 6 or 11 instead of Auto, because Auto on some firmware picks the most crowded channel with confidence.

A router that has not been rebooted in six months also deserves one. Unplug it for thirty seconds, not two. While it boots, check the manufacturer's app for a firmware update; several 2025 router models shipped with Wi-Fi 6 bugs that updates fixed quietly.

When the Mesh Node Is the Problem

Mesh systems add a failure mode of their own: sticky clients. The phone clings to a far node at one bar instead of hopping to the near one. Walking between rooms while running a speed test shows it instantly. Most mesh apps have a per-device roaming or steering toggle, and some let you bind a stationary device to a specific node.

A quick-win order that resolves most cases without a ladder or a manual:

  • Forget the network and reconnect with a fresh password.
  • Switch Private DNS to Automatic and retest for ten minutes.
  • Set home Wi-Fi to use the phone's real MAC address.
  • Reboot the router and install its pending firmware update.
  • Move the 2.4 GHz band to channel 1, 6 or 11 manually.

If the connection still drops after the full sequence, test with a second phone on the same network. Identical behavior means the router or the line; clean behavior means your phone's radio, and a warranty claim beats another evening of toggles.
